Hospitals urge residents to wear masks as COVID-19 cases increase

A joint statement from Pella Regional Health Center and Knoxville Hospital & Clinics

Marion County, Iowa – Pella Regional Health Center and Knoxville Hospital & Clinics are very concerned about the growing spread of COVID-19 in our communities. We recognize that people want to resume many activities such as attending church services and work, community and family events. However, we must continue to balance those activities with the ongoing concern for managing the health and safety of everyone we come in contact with.

According to the CDC guidelines, the best way to prevent illness is to avoid exposure to this virus. It is strongly recommended that everyone cover their nose and mouth with a mask when around others. Masks should be used in conjunction with social distancing, keeping 6 feet between you and others. In addition, masks are strongly encouraged in settings where individuals might raise their voices, such as shouting, chanting, or singing. If masking can prevent the spread of the virus to even one person, and potentially save a life, then you have made a tremendous contribution to the wellbeing of your friends and neighbors.

The hospitals want our communities to know that it remains difficult to receive enough COVID-19 testing supplies to meet the current demand. The recent increase in COVID-19 cases in our area is further stressing the resources available to us. We are asking everyone to take ALL the precautions they can to help avoid additional exposures to the virus.

In an effort to minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the hospital infection prevention programs utilize mitigation measures based on the best scientific knowledge currently available to us. We believe that wearing masks, practicing proper social distancing and handwashing technique remain our best defense against the current COVID-19 pandemic. We strongly encourage everyone to do all that they can to help manage the health and safety of everyone during this pandemic.
