Improving access to cancer care – close to home!
Knoxville Hospital & Clinics and Pella Regional Health Center have teamed up to construct the South Central Iowa Radiation Center, a new radiation oncology treatment center that will serve patients from the region, on the campus of Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.
About the Project
When you are dealing with a difficult disease like cancer, travel can be burdensome. That’s why Knoxville Hospital & Clinics and Pella Regional Health Center have teamed up to construct the South Central Iowa Radiation Center, a new radiation oncology treatment center that will serve patients from the region, on the campus of Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.
Construction of the 7,800-square-foot facility began in May 2025 and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2027.
The South Central Iowa Radiation Center, budgeted to cost $14 million, will house cutting-edge diagnostic tools and state-of-the-art treatment technology including:
- A TrueBeam linear accelerator which will deliver radiation treatments.
- A combined Biograph Trinion PET/CT unit that is crucial in diagnosing cancer and determining the best course of treatment.

By the numbers
Iowa has the second highest age-adjusted rate of new cancers in the U.S.
2,925 total miles traveled and 65 hours spent traveling for treatment per patient, based on 6.5 weeks of radiation in Des Moines.
800+ annual referrals from Pella Regional and Knoxville Hospital for radiation therapy.
The South Central Iowa Radiation Center will improve access to cancer care for the residents of Marion County and surrounding communities, reducing the need for travel to distant treatment centers. Being able to receive the most effective care close to home will give cancer patients more time to focus on their well-being and their loved ones, making the experience easier.
“Time is a valued commodity that we all cherish, and everyone deserves access to the health care they need,” added Kevin Kincaid, CEO of Knoxville Hospital & Clinics. “We are proud of this partnership with Pella Regional Health Center because it represents two great health care organizations coming together to address the growing need for cancer services. We want to give our patients peace of mind knowing they will receive the very best care they need to fight their cancer close to home.”
This collaboration marks the first time two hospitals in this part of the state have partnered to provide a much-needed service for their patients. A portion of the funding for the South Central Iowa Radiation Center will be raised through a capital campaign organized by the Knoxville Hospital & Clinics Foundation and Pella Regional Health Center Foundation.

Along with the Pella Regional Health Center Foundation, we have launched a capital campaign to fund a portion of the estimated $14 million in construction and equipment expenses for the South Central Iowa Radiation Center.
Every dollar given to this campaign makes a difference in the lives of those receiving radiation treatment and their loved ones.
