Certified Pharmacy Technician – FT

This is a Full-Time position working 40 hours a week. 

Assists pharmacists in filling orders and preparing labels for unit doses and prepackaged pharmaceuticals. Counts, packages and labels unit doses for inspection by pharmacist and fills orders for non-prescription pharmaceuticals. National certification as a certified pharmacy technician by a National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredited pharmacy technician certification program and examination is required.

Essential Functions

  • Counts, packages, and labels unit doses of medication for inspection by the pharmacist.
  • Makes regular rounds to nursing units to pick up physicians’ orders and deliver medications. Also answers incoming calls and relays messages to the Director as necessary. Maintains accurate and current editions of the Facts and Comparisons reference manuals located throughout the hospital when quarterly updates are received.
  • Unit-doses medications that are not available from the wholesaler in such packaging according to all federal and state labeling laws and maintains such records.
  • Enters physicians’ orders into the computer system and applies an audit label of each entry to the order sheet for review by the pharmacist-in-charge. Runs computer backup maintenance on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis as necessary to ensure optimal functioning. Notifies the Director with any abnormal functioning of the computer hardware or software.
  • Prepares intravenous piggyback medications, large volume parenteral medications, total parenteral nutrition, and chemotherapy in the laminar flow hood using aseptic technique under the supervision of the pharmacist-in-charge.
  • Checks in daily drug order from wholesaler, attaching price sticker and expiration date stickers, and notifies pharmacist-in-charge of any discrepancies from expected delivery.
  • Assists Director in inspecting and replacing outdated drug products from Pharmacy and nursing storage area on a monthly basis.
  • Reconciles charges by reviewing Accudose dispenses, comparing them to the charges listed and confirms they match or charge it.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current certificates of registration from the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners and Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital setting or other healthcare setting preferred.
  • Consistent with delineated under “Specific Responsibilities/ Duties.”
  • Good oral and written communication skills, knowledge of medical terminology preferred, computer experience preferred.
  • Flexibility in staffing to meet the needs of the hospital census.
  • Required to complete all annual competency training and maintain license and/or certification.
