Surgical Services Manager

This is a Full-Time position working 40/hrs. a week during the day. 

The manager of surgery is responsible for the overall management of the surgery department. Manages a team of physicians, surgeons, surgical techs, nurses and other medical staff. This professional implements and enforces all policies and procedures to provide the highest level of patient medical care. This position requires State Licensure as Registered Nurse (RN).

Essential Functions

  • Supervises, directs, and coordinates the nursing and related activities of his/her units. This includes 24-hour accountability for the department
  • Provides direct patient care as needed in the surgery department. Direct care may be needed in all phases of the surgical procedure, pre-operative, intraoperative and post anesthesia recovery
  • Monitors compliance with standards of care by observations, verbal reports, and written documentation; regularly communicates results to appropriate staff members; develops a plan to increase compliance and implements actions to correct deficiencies.
  • Is responsible for all clinical policies and procedures specific to his/her units; reviews and updates in a timely manner; assigns to staff members.
  • Actively participates in the CQI/RM/UR program; reports CQI results to staff, holds in-services based on CQI findings. Actively participates in the CQI program; attends PI committee or sends designee.
  • Keeps self up to date on and correctly interprets hospital, personnel, and nursing policies and procedures to patients, visitors, and nursing service personnel. Is supportive of hospital policies and procedures and of the administrative staff.
  • Participates in and adheres to the financial plan of operation for the hospital; contributes to operating and capital budgets with recommendations of his/her units; monitors overtime and keeps it to a minimum; reviews monthly budgets.
  • Attends committee meetings (as determined by Medical Staff By-Laws) with physician director, CNO and CEO; communicates problems/solutions up and down hierarchical structure.
  • Directing daily schedules, allocating staff, managing resources, and ensuring smooth patient flow through the surgical unit.
  • Implementing and monitoring protocols to minimize surgical errors, maintain sterile environments, and optimize patient outcomes.

Job Requirements

  • 5 years of surgical nursing experience preferred including pre operative, intraoperative circulatory and scrub nurse and PACU experience
  • 2 years management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and managerial characteristics
  • Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills
  • BSN and CNOR preferred.
  • Current BLS required with ACLS and PALS required within 1 year.
  • Required to complete all annual competency training and maintain license and/or certification.
