Knoxville High School Graduate Halle Baker Awarded the Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation Scholarship

KNOXVILLE, IA – Halle Baker, a 2026 graduate of Knoxville High School, was recently awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation (IHERF), which is supported by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA). She is among 65 outstanding students who were awarded scholarships from IHERF.

Halle will be attending Indian Hills Community College in the fall to begin her pursuit of a nursing degree.

Having known from a young age that she wanted to work in health care, Halle was first introduced to the nursing profession while spending afternoons waiting for her mom to finish her shifts at a health care facility.

“I remember watching her care for patients with compassion and dedication, always taking the time to make them feel comfortable and valued. I admired not only the way she cared for others, but the relationships she built while doing a job she truly loved,” said Halle. “Even as a child, that left a lasting impression on me and, looking back, helped plant the seeds of my interest in health care.”

In 2024, Halle’s perspective on health care deepened even further when she began experiencing ongoing health issues. Throughout numerous appointments and tests, the support she received from her doctors and nurses reinforced the importance of compassionate care – not only for patients, but for their families as well.

“The impact that my mom, doctor, and nurses had on me pushed me to want to enter the health care field. I’ve always loved caring for others and doing whatever I can to help them feel better. These experiences confirmed my desire to pursue a career where I can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives,” shared Halle.

The Iowa Hospital Association awards $2,000 scholarships through IHERF to high school students whose academic performances indicate college success and those who are interested in entering a health care area of study.

The high school scholarship program is part of the IHERF Health Care Careers Scholarship Program. The program was established in 2005 to help address the shortage of health care professionals and encourage high school students to pursue careers with Iowa hospitals.

“The Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation scholarship has been a tremendous benefit to so many current and future health care professionals,” said KHC CEO and IHA Board of Trustees member Kevin Kincaid. “I am grateful to IHERF and IHA for making this opportunity possible and congratulate Halle on her outstanding achievement.”

Since its inception, the program has supported nearly 1,100 Iowa students in pursuing higher education in health care fields, contributing to a growing pipeline of skilled professionals dedicated to serving patients across the state. To date, the foundation has awarded approximately $3.3 million in scholarships.

Applications for 2027 scholarships open November 1, 2026. Additional information can be found online at iherf.org.
