Education Coordinator – FT

This is a Full-Time position working 36-hours a week during the day.

Responsible for constructing and implementing curriculum that meets the current demands for education of healthcare workers. Provides ongoing training and education for employees of Knoxville Hospital and Clinics.

Essential Functions

  • Works directly with leadership to identify the scope of services and purpose of the Education Department.
  • Organizes the total operation of the education department into an effective unit; this includes education, testing procedures and protocols, records/files confidentiality and everyday problems as needed, collects and compiles licensure / certifications and informs staff of expirations or recertifications needed.
  • Extensive responsibility in the areas of coordination of education and orientation programs, assessing educational needs of employees, collecting and analyzing education data and maintains knowledge of current education related topics and procedures.
  • Maintains department-related policies and procedures.
  • Has knowledge of hospital-wide policies/procedures and guidelines. This includes: CQI/quality assurance measures, orientation, delegation, mandatory staff education, and appropriate staffing needs as required covering the departmental scope of services and levels of quality patient services.
  • Collaborates with the leaders of the organization to assist with department specific education and competency needs
  • Works with hospital leadership in establishing and monitoring the education department budget.

  • Attends all in-house and out-of-facility education meetings relevant to this position.
  • The Education Coordinator must have a positive attitude, be flexible in nature, adjust and perform other related duties as required of a member of, and in support of, Knoxville Hospital and Clinics.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed across the organization as needed
  • Assists with new hire onboarding and education
  • Collaborates with the clinical informaticists for electronic medical record initial and ongoing education
  • Collaborate with local schools to assist with clinical rotations and preceptorships
  • Performs as one of the instructors for the certified nursing assistant program with the local school
  • Completes cross training to the infection prevention nurse role to serve as back up to the primary IP nurse in their absence
  • Coordinates education needs with the quality director, trauma coordinator and department leaders
  • Provides annual education to all staff
  • Arranges for live in-services, equipment education and continued education as needed
  • Instructor for BLS, ACLS, HazMat, MOAB
  • Provides direct patient care to patients as needed with an expectation that the education coordinator spends some hours each week in clinical areas to build relationships and understand the care delivery to effectively create education plans
  • Maintains the HealthStream online education system and records.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership.

Job Requirements

  • Current registration and valid licensure as RN with the Iowa Board of Nursing.
  • BSN or bachelor’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years staff nurse experience in an acute care setting.
  • Previous management, instructor, and patient education experience preferred.
  • Maintains BLS and ACLS provider and instructor certifications
  • A broad knowledge of basic nursing skills is required.
  • Preference for nurses who have experience in multiple clinical areas
  • Is competent in the technical skills required to operate such equipment as is deemed necessary for use for the education, training, as well as record keeping provided by the department
  • Required to complete all annual competency training and maintain license and/or certification.
